The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company, known as Stop & Shop, is a chain of supermarkets located in the northeastern United States (New England, New York, and New Jersey). From its beginnings in 1892 as a small grocery store, it has grown to over 395 stores chain-wide and employ 63,000 associates. The company began opening gas stations in 2008 to complement their gasoline reward program which offers customers discounted gas prices for shopping at the supermarket. Stop & Shop has been a wholly owned subsidiary of the Dutch supermarket operator Ahold since 1995. In 2016, Ahold merged with Belgium-based Delhaize Group, (creating Ahold Delhaize) which brought the grocery companies Hannaford, Food Lion and Stop & Shop all under the same parent company.
