The chain operates general merchandise retail discount stores providing consumers with a selection of competitively-priced merchandise in convenient neighborhood stores. Founded in 1959, in North Carolina, Family Dollar went public in 1970. In 2001, they joined the S&P 500 stock market index and in 2002, the Fortune 500 list of largest publicly held companies. In 2015, Family Dollar was acquired by Dollar Tree for $8.5B. As of early 2024, the chain operated more than 8,350 stores and employed over 77,000 people.
