Fort Pierce is a city in and the county seat of St. Lucie County along the Atlantic coast in Southeast Florida. It covers 20.8 square miles, six of which are water.Named after the army installation built in 1838 during the Second Seminole War, Fort Pierce is well known as the Sunrise City, sister to San Francisco, the Sunset City. It was awarded the 2005 City of Excellence Award by the Florida League of Cities for overall excellence in city government, and in 2011, Main Street Fort Pierce, Inc. received the Great American Main Street Award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Due to the devastation caused by hurricanes Frances and Jeanne in 2004, the city began constructing 12 artificial barrier islands to help protect the city and the coastline from future natural disasters. At a cost of $18 million, the project was completed in 2013 and today, these islands include oyster beds, lime rock artificial reefs, mangrove fringes and coastal dunes. Along with the adjacent ivory bush coral reefs, these new habitats support a wide array of marine life including a large manatee population. St. Lucie County had a population of 277,789 as of the 2010 census which represented a massive 44.2% increase since 2000 and contributed to a 219% increase in the last 30 years. It is estimated to have grown an additional 3.3% between 2010 and 2013. St. Lucie County is included in the Port St. Lucie Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Port St. Lucie Combined Statistical Area. St. Lucie County is home to several education facilities and points of interest including branches of the University of Florida and Florida Atlantic University, as well as an aquarium, botanical garden and museum honoring the Navy SEALs, the elite force that began at Fort Pierce. Fort Pierce is 67 miles north of West Palm Beach, FL.
