ALDI is a small-format supermarket chain focusing on creating an efficient shopping experience, saving customers time and money without sacrificing quality. ALDI mainly sells a range of grocery items that are exclusively produced, custom-branded products (often very similar to and produced by major brands) including produce, meat and dairy. They also carry branded products. The family-owned business, initially founded in 1913, was divided in 1961 to form two groups of companies: ALDI South and ALDI North. These two business groups have remained linked by family ties, but both are legally and economically independent entities. With the exception of Germany, both groups operate in different countries. In 1976, ALDI South opened its first U.S. store in Iowa. In 1979, ALDI North acquired the American chain known as Trader Joe’s. The companies remain independently operated and while both Nord and Süd operate in the United States, Nord operates only under the brand “Trader Joe’s.” At the start of 2023, ALDI South operated more than 7,100 locations in 11 countries, with over 2,220 locations in the United States. ALDI South employs more than 200,000 people worldwide. In 2022, ALDI USA was a growth leader in the supermarket sector, adding over 85 stores and having a revenue of approximately $121.1B.
